After years of anticipation, great news has finally arrived for customers looking to purchase a Tesla in India. Tesla is officially entering the Indian market with its first showroom, referred to as an “experience centre,” set to open on July 15 in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).
This marks a significant milestone for Elon Musk’s electric vehicle brand as it begins retail operations in one of the world’s fastest-growing EV markets.
Showroom Details: Premium Location, Premium Experience
The Tesla showroom in India is located in the Maker Laxity building, a high-end retail hub near Mumbai airport. The leased space spans 4,003 square feet, with Tesla reportedly paying Rs 38.8 lakh annually, with increases of 5% each year.
Visitors will have the opportunity to explore Tesla’s EV lineup and technologies, although test drives and deliveries may not be available at the outset.

Tesla’s India Strategy: Retail First, Manufacturing Later?
Tesla has clarified that its current focus is on retail rather than manufacturing. The company has leased multiple properties throughout India, including a service centre in Kurla West, Mumbai, and an engineering hub in Pune.
They also have a registered office in Bengaluru and a temporary office near BKC.
Global Context: Why India, Why Now?
India’s EV policy now offers reduced import duties (15%) for EVs priced above $35,000, making it simpler for Tesla to sell imported models. Errol Musk, Elon’s father, recently visited India and expressed optimism regarding future manufacturing partnerships between Tesla and the Indian government.
Tesla’s entry aligns with India’s ambitious EV targets, aiming for 30% passenger vehicle penetration by 2030. Furthermore, Tesla is expected to open a second showroom in New Delhi’s Aerocity soon, with initial models likely to include the Model Y, which has already been imported from China.
