Goa May Ban Rental Licenses for Mahindra Thar
The Goa government is reportedly considering a proposal to stop issuing new rental licenses for the Mahindra Thar, following growing concerns over its increasing use by self-drive tourists and a rise in traffic violations.
If implemented, the move could significantly impact self-drive rental operators that rely on the popular off-road SUV to attract visitors.
The proposal has generated widespread discussion across the tourism and automobile sectors, as the Mahindra Thar has become one of the most sought-after rental SUVs in Goa. Authorities believe stricter regulations could help improve road safety while ensuring responsible tourism.
Why the Proposal?
Authorities have observed an increase in traffic violations involving rental Mahindra Thars, including overspeeding, dangerous stunts, and driving in restricted areas such as beaches and village roads. Officials believe stricter regulations could help reduce such incidents and promote responsible tourism.
Existing Rental Vehicles Unlikely to Be Affected
The proposed restriction is expected to apply only to new rental permits. Existing Mahindra Thars with valid commercial licenses are likely to continue operating until their permits expire. The government is yet to make a final decision and is expected to consult tourism stakeholders and rental operators before implementing the policy.

What It Means?
The Mahindra Thar remains one of the most popular self-drive rental SUVs in Goa because of its rugged design and off-road capability.
If the proposal is implemented, rental companies may have to diversify their fleets with other SUVs. While private ownership of the Thar will remain unaffected, the move could reshape Goa’s self-drive rental market and encourage safer driving practices among tourists.
