Mahindra and Mahindra is planning to update its most popular off-roading SUV, the Mahindra Thar Facelift, in the Indian market. In a recent development, the Mahindra Thar facelift has been spotted testing on Indian roads. The test mule is heavily camouflaged, and hence most of the design updates of the SUV remain unclear.
As per reports, this SUV will look much more similar to its bigger sibling, the Mahindra Thar Roxx, and it is expected to be launched in the Indian market later this year.
So, let’s take a look at the features expected in the upcoming Mahindra Thar facelift.

Mahindra Thar Facelift: Design
Upcoming Mahindra Thar Facelift is expected to retain its iconic boxy and rugged silhouette while introducing subtle yet noticeable design upgrades inspired by the newer Thar Roxx.
The Spy shots of the SUV indicate a more modern front fascia featuring LED projector headlamps with C-shaped DRLs, along with a revised six-slot grille design that gives the SUV a bolder and more premium appearance.
The test mule also hints at new diamond-cut alloy wheels and slightly tweaked bumpers, enhancing its road presence without compromising its off-road DNA.
At the rear, minor updates like reworked LED tail lamps are expected, while the overall stance and proportions will largely remain unchanged to preserve the Thar’s signature identity.
Mahindra Thar Facelift: Powertrain
Mahindra Thar Facelift is expected to continue with the brand’s proven engine lineup, ensuring a balance between performance and off-road capability.
It will likely be offered with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing around 150 hp and a 2.2-litre diesel engine delivering close to 130 hp, along with a smaller 1.5-litre diesel option for RWD variants.
Transmission choices are expected to include both 6-speed manual and automatic gearboxes, with 4×2 and 4×4 configurations available depending on the variant.
In terms of efficiency, the Thar facelift could deliver a mileage of around 13–15 km/l depending on the engine and drivetrain setup. Despite being a hardcore off-roader, it is expected to offer a top speed of approximately 155 km/h, making it capable enough for highway cruising as well.
Mahindra Thar Facelift: Cabin
Mahindra Thar Facelift is expected to receive a noticeable upgrade inside the cabin, making it more practical and feature-rich while still retaining its rugged appeal. The interior could feature a refreshed dashboard layout with a larger 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system, supporting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, along with added conveniences like rear AC vents, cruise control, and wireless charging.
Higher variants may also introduce ventilated seats, automatic climate control, and keyless entry with push-button start, bringing it closer to more premium SUVs in the segment.
On the safety front, the Thar facelift is expected to significantly step up with features like up to six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and a 360-degree camera, while continuing to offer essentials such as a roll cage, hill-hold and hill descent control for off-road security.
There are also strong expectations of Level-2 ADAS features being introduced, which would mark a major leap in safety for the Thar lineup.
Mahindra Thar Facelift: Price and Availability
Mahindra Thar Facelift is expected to be priced slightly higher than the current model, likely starting from around ₹10 lakh and going up to Rs 18 lakh (ex-showroom), with launch anticipated in 2026.
Once launched, it will rival off-road SUVs like Force Gurkha and Maruti Jimny, while also competing with lifestyle SUVs in the segment.
