Is JSW Motors Buying a Major Stake in Volkswagen India? Here’s What We Know
India’s automotive industry could be on the verge of one of its biggest corporate developments. According to a Bloomberg report, the Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group is in advanced discussions to acquire a stake in Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd, with the deal potentially giving the conglomerate a majority holding in Volkswagen AG’s India business.
If completed, the investment would inject fresh capital into the company, which manages brands including Skoda, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini and Bentley in India.
However, the deal is still under negotiation, and its final terms have yet to be agreed upon.
Volkswagen Yet To Confirm Reports
Volkswagen has not officially confirmed reports of the proposed investment. Responding to media speculation, a company spokesperson said the automaker routinely assesses strategic opportunities to strengthen its position in India’s passenger vehicle market.
However, the spokesperson declined to comment specifically on the reported discussions with JSW Group, leaving the status of the potential deal unconfirmed for now.

What This Deal Could Mean?
If the proposed investment goes through, it would mark JSW Group’s second major entry into India’s passenger vehicle market after acquiring a 35 percent stake in MG Motor India in 2023, leading to the formation of JSW MG Motor India in 2024.
For Volkswagen Group, the partnership could provide additional capital and a stronger local ally to accelerate its growth plans in India, one of the world’s fastest-growing automobile markets.
Despite offering brands such as Volkswagen, Skoda, Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini and Bentley, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India accounted for 2.34 percent of the country’s passenger vehicle sales in FY2026.
In comparison, JSW MG Motor India held a 1.40 percent market share, while Kia, which entered the Indian market in 2019, commanded a significantly higher 5.94 percent share. A collaboration with JSW could help Volkswagen strengthen its competitiveness and expand its presence in the Indian market.
