KTM 390 Adventure Variants Explained: Base, X, R and S Compared
KTM has expanded the 390 Adventure lineup in India with four distinct variants to cater to different riding styles. Although all four motorcycles share the same aggressive adventure styling, frame and bodywork, KTM has given each variant a unique purpose.
The entry-level model focuses on affordability, the X targets touring enthusiasts, the R prioritises off-road performance, while the S combines premium hardware with everyday usability. Here’s a closer look at what separates each version.
What Do All KTM 390 Adventure Variants Share?
KTM builds all four variants on the same steel trellis frame and subframe. The motorcycles also feature identical body panels, LED lighting, TFT instrument cluster, electronic rider aids and overall styling. The company differentiates the variants mainly through engine tuning, suspension, wheels and equipment.
KTM 390 Adventure (Base)
The entry-level 390 Adventure stands apart by using a 349cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine instead of the larger 398cc motor available on the higher variants.
The engine produces 41.5 hp and 33.5 Nm of torque. KTM pairs it with the same chassis, 200 mm front and 205 mm rear suspension travel, 19-inch front and 17-inch rear alloy wheels, and the TFT display available on the more expensive variants.
KTM prices the base model at Rs 2.87 lakh (ex-showroom). The lower engine capacity allows the motorcycle to attract 18 percent GST, making it significantly more affordable than the rest of the lineup.
KTM 390 Adventure X
The 390 Adventure X uses the full-size 398cc single-cylinder engine, which delivers 46 hp and 39 Nm of torque.
Apart from the more powerful engine and slightly different colour schemes, KTM keeps the chassis, suspension, alloy wheels, electronics and feature list almost identical to the base model.
KTM sells the 390 Adventure X for Rs 3.50 lakh (ex-showroom), making it Rs 63,000 more expensive than the base variant.
KTM 390 Adventure R
The 390 Adventure R targets riders who spend more time off the road.
KTM equips this variant with 230 mm front and rear suspension travel, giving it the highest suspension travel in the range. The motorcycle also rides on 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wire-spoke wheels wrapped in Mitas dual-purpose tyres.
The longer suspension increases the seat height to 880 mm and boosts ground clearance to 272 mm, making the R the most capable off-road machine in the lineup.
KTM has priced the 390 Adventure R at Rs 3.86 lakh (ex-showroom).

KTM 390 Adventure S
The 390 Adventure S sits at the top of the range and focuses on balancing adventure capability with everyday comfort.
KTM equips the motorcycle with adjustable suspension offering 200 mm front and 205 mm rear travel. The company also fits 21-inch front and 17-inch rear wire-spoke wheels that support tubeless tyres, offering greater convenience during long-distance touring.
Compared to the R, the S features a lower 830 mm seat height and 237 mm ground clearance, making it easier to ride both on highways and in city traffic.
Following the latest price revision, KTM now sells the 390 Adventure S for Rs 4.05 lakh (ex-showroom).

The 390 Adventure S offers the most balanced package by combining adjustable suspension, tubeless wire-spoke wheels and a more accessible seat height, making it the best choice for riders who split their time between highways, city roads and occasional trails.
