BMW Recalls Over 29,000 Vehicles in the US Over Potential Fire Risk

BMW has announced a safety recall for more than 29,000 vehicles in the United States after identifying a defect that could increase the risk of an engine compartment fire.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall affects several plug-in hybrid models equipped with a faulty engine starter relay.

While no widespread incidents have been reported, BMW is taking preventive action to address the issue before it leads to serious safety concerns.

What Caused the Recall?

The recall is linked to a problem with the engine starter relay used in certain BMW plug-in hybrid vehicles. Over time, moisture and electrical stress may cause the relay to corrode, increasing electrical resistance inside the component. If the corrosion becomes severe, the relay can overheat or develop a short circuit while starting the engine.

Since the starter relay is located near important electrical components, overheating could increase the risk of a fire in the engine bay. To prevent potential accidents, BMW has launched a voluntary recall and will repair the affected vehicles free of charge.

Which BMW Models Are Affected?

The recall covers 29,119 plug-in hybrid vehicles produced between 2016 and 2020. The affected models include:

  • BMW 530e and 530e xDrive
  • BMW 740Le xDrive
  • Selected BMW 330e iPerformance models

These vehicles use a hybrid powertrain that combines a petrol engine with an electric motor, placing different demands on the starter relay compared to conventional petrol-powered models.

What Will BMW Do?

BMW has instructed its authorised dealerships to inspect all affected vehicles. If the faulty starter relay is found, technicians will replace the engine starter assembly and related components free of cost.

Vehicle owners will receive official recall notifications with instructions on how to schedule an appointment at their nearest BMW service centre.

What Should Owners Do?

Owners of the affected models should check whether their vehicle is included in the recall by entering the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on BMW’s or the NHTSA’s official recall website. Until the repair is completed, drivers should pay attention to any unusual electrical warning lights or starting issues and contact an authorised BMW dealership if they notice any problems.

Why This Recall Is Important?

Vehicle recalls play an important role in improving road safety and preventing potential accidents. By identifying the defect early and offering free repairs, BMW aims to reduce the risk of vehicle fires and ensure customer safety. The recall also highlights the importance of regularly addressing technical issues in increasingly complex hybrid vehicles.

BMW owners who receive a recall notice are advised to arrange the repair as soon as possible to keep their vehicles safe and reliable.
