The demand for diesel cars, which was once the first choice of people due to their high mileage and powerful engines, is gradually decreasing in Indian Maket in past few years.
According to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, the share of diesel cars in the Indian car market was 53 percent in 2013, which has come down to 18 percent in 2023.
As per the reports, there are many reasons behind this like stringent emission norms, improvement in mileage of petrol cars, rising prices of diesel and ban on 10 year old diesel vehicles in Delhi NCR and few more states.

The Demand of Diesel SUVs has also decreases
The last few years have seen a major decline in the sale of diesel engines in the Indian passenger vehicle market. The share of diesel in segments like hatchback cars and sedan cars has also fallen to almost zero percent.
However, the increasing demand for SUVs is still boosting the sales of diesel engine cars in the market. Despite of this, the share of diesel engines in the SUV segment has declined to 33 percent in 2023 compared to 97 percent in 2013-14.
Automobile Companies are focusing on other options too
Car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki and Honda had discontinued all its diesel cars in the country. Other carmakers like Hyundai and Tata Motors are also increasingly focusing on petrol-powered cars.
Now fuel options like petrol, CNG, petrol hybrid and electric are reducing the share of diesel-powered vehicles in all segments. The demand for diesel cars is likely to decline further in the coming years.
