Mercedes-Benz is preparing to bid farewell to its A-Class hatchback and sedan by 2028, replacing it with a fresh entry-level model built on its new MMA (Modular Mercedes Architecture) platform.
As the luxury marque streamlines its compact vehicle strategy, the new hatchback will be designed to appeal globally, offering options for both internal combustion engines (ICE) and electric powertrains.
This change reflects Mercedes’ response to shifting market preferences, particularly greater demand for SUVs and crossovers, but also a renewed recognition that affordable luxury hatchbacks still have a role.
Competing with the likes of the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series, this model could reshape the compact segment.
What the Design Might Be Like for Mercedes-Benz New Model?
The upcoming entry-level Mercedes is expected to adopt a traditional 5-door hatch form, unlike many of its newer SUV-first designs.
It may share exterior and proportion cues (wheelbase, track width) with the third-generation GLA crossover set to arrive in 2026. Designers will likely balance sporty styling with luxury touches, ensuring it feels premium while being compact and efficient.
This new hatchback will use the MMA platform, which is versatile enough to support both ICE and electric drivetrain options. That gives Mercedes flexibility in different markets at different stages of EV adoption. The MMA underpins other upcoming models: the next-gen GLA, GLB, and the CLA sedan / Shooting Brake.

A-Class Phase Out & Timing
Mercedes has confirmed that the current fourth-generation A-Class will be phased out globally around 2028. It will continue production until then in many regions. Both hatchback and sedan versions will be discontinued, while the B-Class MPV is also being retired.

What It Means for Mercedes’ Lineup?
With the A-Class out of the picture, the new model will become the entry point of the brand’s compact hatch family, joined by refreshed versions of the CLA sedan, the GLA & GLB crossovers, and an upcoming “baby G-Class.” The EQA and EQB electric models will be folded into GLA/GLB lines with “With EQ Technology” branding rather than as separate EQ-badged vehicles.
The new Mercedes hatch will be positioned to take on Audi A3, BMW 1 Series, as well as perhaps future compact EVs like Volkswagen’s ID series and others aiming in this premium small car space. It needs to offer stylish design, advanced tech, and both ICE and EV options to stay competitive.
