Can We Use NOS In Under 200cc Bikes? Here’s Everything You Need To Know
We have all watched movies like Dhoom or Fast & Furious, completely glued to the screen as characters press a mysterious button and blast into hyper-speed with a dramatic hiss of blue flames.
It looks incredibly cool, leaving many Indian motorcycle enthusiasts wondering: Can I install a Nitrous Oxide System (NOS) on my Yamaha R15, KTM RC 200, Bajaj Pulsar NS200, or TVS Apache RTR 200?
While NOS is deeply rooted in global street racing and drag culture, bringing that movie magic to a small-displacement commuter or entry-level sports bike in India is a completely different story.
What Is NOS?
NOS stands for Nitrous Oxide System. It is a performance-enhancing modification that injects nitrous oxide gas ($N_2O$) into an internal combustion engine.
At high temperatures inside the cylinder, the gas breaks down, releasing highly concentrated oxygen. This extra oxygen allows the engine to burn more fuel, creating a massive, sudden spike in power.
How Can NOS Be Used In Under 200cc Bikes?
Technically, it is possible to fit a small motorcycle with an aftermarket nitrous kit. These systems are available in “dry” variants (injecting just gas into the air intake) or “wet” variants (mixing both fuel and nitrous together).
An under-200cc setup typically uses a compact nitrous bottle, specialized delivery lines, an injection nozzle, and a handlebar-mounted activation switch. However, because small-capacity single-cylinder engines are highly sensitive, successful installation requires extensive modifications:
Upgraded Spark Plugs: To handle the extreme heat.
ECU Remapping: To precisely manage the altered air-fuel ratios.
Professional Tuning: To prevent the engine from running too lean and blowing up.
Will NOS Boost Performance?
Yes, activating NOS provides an immediate, aggressive surge of acceleration. For a brief moment, a 150cc or 200cc motorcycle will feel significantly faster as the engine burns through the extra oxygen.
This short-burst horsepower increase can be thrilling on a drag strip. However, lightweight under-200cc chassis and standard suspension components are not designed for such violent bursts of speed, which can drastically compromise stability and handling.
Side Effects Of Using NOS
The physical toll on a small engine is severe. Most under-200cc bikes in India are built for daily reliability and fuel efficiency, not racing tolerances. The sudden thermal shock and extreme cylinder pressure from NOS can cause:
Melted or cracked pistons.
Blown head gaskets and severe engine overheating.
Premature clutch wear and immense gearbox stress.
One bad tune or holding the button down a few seconds too long can cause total engine failure, completely ruining your daily ride.
Is NOS Legal In India?
Using a Nitrous Oxide System on public roads in India is strictly illegal. According to the Indian Motor Vehicles Act, any major aftermarket modification that alters the factory engine specifications, emissions, or safety parameters is prohibited.
If caught with a nitrous bottle attached to your motorcycle, traffic police can levy heavy fines, seize the vehicle, and charge you with illegal street racing. Furthermore, insurance companies will instantly reject any claims if an unapproved performance modification is discovered.
Our Recommendation
While the idea of having a real-life nitro button sounds thrilling, it is simply not practical, safe, or legal for daily-driven under-200cc motorcycles.
If you want more speed, focus on safer upgrades like stickier tyres, high-flow air filters, minor ECU remapping, or investing in professional riding gear and track days to improve your skills.
