Volkswagen May Bring More Niche European Cars to India Under India-EU FTA

Volkswagen views the India-EU FTA as a major opportunity to expand its Indian product portfolio.

Comments from Volkswagen Passenger Cars CEO Thomas Schäfer indicate that the agreement could make it possible to introduce select niche models from the brand’s global lineup.

However, Volkswagen has not confirmed any specific models yet and is carefully studying market conditions before making final decisions.

FTA Opportunity

Lower trade barriers under the India-EU FTA could potentially enhance the commercial feasibility of importing selected European-built vehicles into India. Niche models with lower sales volumes may become viable options without necessitating full local manufacturing.

Volkswagen’s India Strategy

The company maintains a strong focus on India as both a rapidly expanding domestic automotive market and an essential global hub for engineering, IT, and R&D. Volkswagen already exports locally manufactured vehicles to over 40 global markets and treats exports as a foundational pillar of its long-term strategy.

Powertrain Plans

Volkswagen possesses global access to a diverse array of powertrain technologies, including petrol, CNG, diesel, flex-fuel, and electric systems. Schäfer noted that the manufacturer will evaluate localizing different powertrain technologies according to the evolving demands of the Indian market.

Upcoming Products and Outlook

Volkswagen has officially confirmed a new compact SUV for India scheduled for 2027, while additional European niche cars remain strictly under evaluation. No particular imported models have been finalized for release at this time.
