Tata Motors introduced the petrol-powered Safari earlier this year with a punchy turbo-petrol engine. However, official ARAI fuel efficiency numbers for the petrol Harrier and Safari remain unannounced by the carmaker.
To give buyers clarity, a real-world fuel economy test was recently conducted on the Tata Safari Petrol Automatic. The test vehicle was the top-tier Accomplished Ultra Red Dark 7-seater variant, which weighs approximately 1,820 kg.
Here is a detailed look at how Tata’s flagship 3-row petrol SUV performed in real-world city and highway driving.
Tata Safari Petrol Automatic: Engine Specs
Under the hood, the Tata Safari Petrol features a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged TGDI petrol engine. This motor develops 168 bhp of maximum power and 280 Nm of peak torque. The engine pairs with a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission with manual override and paddle shifters.
This powertrain offers smooth low-end acceleration and linear power delivery, making city driving relaxed despite the SUV’s large dimensions.
Real-World City Fuel Efficiency
In city stop-and-go traffic testing, the Tata Safari Petrol Automatic returned a real-world mileage figure of 9.07 kmpl. Interestingly, the vehicle’s Multi-Information Display (MID) stayed fixed at 8 kmpl during city driving, indicating a minor software display cap. Returning over 9 kmpl in heavy urban traffic is reasonable for a 3-row SUV weighing over 1.8 tonnes.
Real-World Highway Fuel Efficiency
The petrol automatic SUV proved noticeably more efficient out on open highways. Maintaining steady cruising speeds, the Safari Petrol AT delivered an impressive real-world mileage of 14.92 kmpl. In this case, the internal MID calculated a slightly lower figure of 14.50 kmpl. The taller gear ratios of the 6-speed automatic keep the engine revs low while cruising, benefiting fuel consumption on long road trips.
Price and Final Verdict
Prices for the Tata Safari petrol line start around Rs 13.29 lakh (ex-showroom) for the entry-level variants. Delivering around 9 kmpl in traffic and nearly 15 kmpl on highways, the Safari Petrol AT offers a balanced compromise between refinement, strong overtaking performance, and manageable fuel bills for buyers moving away from diesel power.
