Maruti To Launch New Electric Cars in India: What to Expect?

Maruti Suzuki is preparing to expand its electric vehicle lineup in India after entering the EV market with the e Vitara. The company is also developing a new three-row electric vehicle, internally codenamed YMC, which has appeared in recent spy shots.

The upcoming model could become Maruti Suzuki’s first electric MPV and target families looking for a spacious, practical electric vehicle. The YMC could share its platform and powertrain components with the e Vitara.

Maruti has not confirmed its final name, specifications or prices. Reports suggest that the new electric MPV could reach showrooms in 2027, adding another model to the company’s expanding SUV and MPV portfolio.

Maruti YMC Electric MPV: What to Expect From Its Design?

The upcoming Maruti YMC appears to feature a boxy silhouette, an upright stance and a long rear section to accommodate three rows of seats. Recent spy shots show a large tailgate area, a high-mounted stop lamp, a rear wiper and connected-looking tail-lamp elements.

The test vehicle also appears to have body cladding and a relatively long rear overhang. These details suggest a family-focused design with SUV-inspired styling.

The production model could borrow some design elements from the e Vitara while retaining a distinct identity. However, heavy camouflage hides several exterior details, and Maruti Suzuki has not revealed the final design or confirmed its dimensions.

Battery, Range and Powertrain: What Could Maruti Offer?

Maruti Suzuki could use the e Vitara’s electric vehicle platform and powertrain components for the YMC. The e Vitara offers battery packs of around 49kWh and 61kWh, which could also feature in the upcoming electric MPV.

The larger battery could help deliver a driving range of around 500km, although the final figure will depend on the vehicle’s weight, battery configuration and efficiency.

The e Vitara’s larger battery version has a claimed range of up to 543km under its applicable test cycle. The YMC could also share electric motor technology with the e Vitara. Maruti has not confirmed the battery capacity, motor output, drivetrain or range of the new model.

More Maruti Electric Cars: Features and Future Plans

The YMC is expected to offer a spacious cabin with three-row seating, making it suitable for families who need additional passenger capacity. Higher variants could get a digital instrument cluster, a touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, wireless charging and a panoramic sunroof.

Advanced driver assistance systems could also feature, but Maruti has not confirmed the equipment list. The YMC may form part of the company’s broader plan to expand its SUV and electric vehicle portfolio.

Maruti is also expected to develop a Toyota-badged derivative of the electric MPV. However, the company has not officially announced the launch schedule or specifications of its other upcoming electric cars.
