Hyundai Ioniq P Expected to Be India’s New Entry-Level EV: Launch, Features and Rivals
Hyundai’s upcoming entry-level electric SUV for India could carry the Ioniq P name. Hyundai Motor Company management mentioned the name during its Q3 2026 analyst call, although Hyundai Motor India has not officially confirmed the nomenclature.
The new EV carries the internal codename HE1i and will sit below the Creta Electric in Hyundai’s India portfolio. The company plans to position it as a more accessible electric SUV for Indian buyers.
Hyundai expects the new model to help increase its EV penetration in India. The compact EV is now expected to debut in January 2027, according to recent reports.
Hyundai Ioniq P: Platform and Design
The upcoming Hyundai Ioniq P, if that becomes its final name, will use Hyundai’s E-GMP (K) platform. This platform also underpins the Inster electric car sold in international markets.
Hyundai has designed the new compact SUV specifically for India and will manufacture it at the company’s Sriperumbudur plant in Tamil Nadu. The model will follow a compact, sub-four-metre SUV format to compete in one of India’s fastest-growing EV segments.
Hyundai has not revealed the production-spec design yet. The company is expected to give the India-specific EV a modern exterior with a distinctive electric-vehicle design, while keeping practicality important for Indian buyers.
Hyundai Ioniq P: Battery and Powertrain
Hyundai will offer the new compact EV in Standard Range and Long Range versions. The company has not revealed the battery capacities, motor output or claimed driving range for the India-spec model. The international Hyundai Inster can provide a reference, as it uses 42kWh and 49kWh battery packs with claimed WLTP ranges of up to 300km and 355km, respectively.
However, Hyundai has not confirmed that the India-spec EV will use the same battery packs or deliver similar range figures. The new EV will initially use battery cells supplied by Volts before Hyundai shifts to locally sourced cells through its association with Exide.

Hyundai Ioniq P: Cabin and Safety Features
Hyundai has confirmed that its upcoming compact EV will receive a next-generation infotainment system and Level 2 assisted-driving technology. The company has not yet revealed the complete equipment list.
The international Inster offers features such as dual 10.25-inch displays, automatic climate control and a 360-degree camera, but Hyundai has not confirmed these features for the India-spec model.
The upcoming EV will focus on technology and safety as it enters the more affordable electric SUV segment. Hyundai’s decision to offer Level 2 ADAS should also give the model a strong technology focus when it arrives in India.
Hyundai Ioniq P Expected Price and Rivals
Hyundai has not announced the price of the upcoming compact EV. The model will sit below the Creta Electric and target the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV 3XO EV and Kia Syros EV. Its India-specific production and compact dimensions could help Hyundai position it competitively.
