Mercedes-Benz S-Class Plug-In Hybrid Launched In India At Rs 2.20 Crore

Mercedes-Benz India has officially launched the heavily updated 2026Mercedes-Benz S-Class flagship luxury sedan in the country. This mid-life update marks a historic milestone for the brand as it introduces the country’s first-ever plug-in hybrid S-Class variant, the S 450e.

Bringing an unparalleled mix of high-end performance and eco-conscious engineering, the vehicle represents an extensive mechanical evolution, with more than half of its components newly developed or refined.

The premium sedan masterfully combines a potent turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and a substantial battery pack. This sophisticated mechanical setup offers effortless performance, exceptionally low tailpipe emissions, and a highly usable electric-only driving range of up to 115km for city driving.

Official bookings for the luxury hybrid limousine are now open across all dealerships nationwide, while customer deliveries are scheduled to commence around the Diwali festive season in Q4 2026.

Mercedes-Benz S 450e Price In India

The German luxury carmaker is offering the updated flagship model in two distinct trim choices. The Mercedes-Benz S 450e Launch Edition (Exclusive Line) carries an introductory price tag of Rs 2.20 crore, while the highly customisable S 450e MANUFAKTUR Edition (AMG Line) is priced from Rs 2.38 crore (all prices, ex-showroom pan-India).

With order books officially open, buyers can secure their units ahead of the scheduled deliveries in the final quarter of 2026. The new plug-in hybrid commands a substantial premium of approximately Rs 35 lakh over the entry-level variants of the previous-generation model.

This price hike is heavily justified by the integration of state-of-the-art hybrid architecture, highly localized luxury elements, and a heavily upgraded onboard technology package.

Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain And Performance

Beneath its long, sculpted hood, the Mercedes-Benz S 450e features an advanced 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six petrol engine.

This refined internal combustion engine works in tandem with a high-torque electric motor integrated directly into the transmission housing. Energizing the electrical system is a sizable 22kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

Together, the combined hybrid system unleashes a formidable output of 435hp alongside a mountain-moving 680Nm of peak torque. Power is directed exclusively to the rear wheels via the ultra-smooth 9G-Tronic 9-speed automatic transmission.

Despite its immense proportions and a clear design bias toward rear-seat luxury, the hybrid limousine delivers sports-car-like performance figures, executing the 0-100km/h sprint in just 5.7 seconds before hitting an electronically governed top speed of 250km/h.

Up To 115km Electric-Only Driving Range

A primary highlight of the new Mercedes S-Class PHEV is its highly efficient electrical sub-system, which delivers a claimed electric-only driving range of up to 115km on the global WLTP testing cycle. This places the sedan among the longest-range plug-in hybrid luxury vehicles sold globally, making it fully capable of managing everyday city commuting without ever firing up the petrol motor.

When the battery runs low, the sedan can be juiced up via standard AC wall boxes or through its 60kW DC fast charging support, which replenishes the battery from 10-80% in roughly 20 minutes. Thanks to this dual-energy setup, the car achieves an astonishing claimed fuel efficiency rating of over 32kmpl, radically dropping fuel consumption while offering completely unrestricted long-distance highway cruising capability.

Luxury Cabin Loaded With Technology

The interior of the S-Class 2026 model receives a spectacular digital overhaul centered around the new MBUX Superscreen layout. The dashboard features a massive 14.4-inch central OLED touchscreen infotainment system, flanked by a dedicated entertainment display for the front passenger.

The entire infrastructure runs on the highly responsive, AI-integrated MB.OS software platform, which supports conversational “Hey Mercedes” prompts.

Rear-seat passengers are treated to individual 13.1-inch entertainment screens alongside a premium Burmester 4D surround sound system utilizing 31 speakers for an immersive acoustic experience.

Additional cabin comforts include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, four-zone automatic climate control, and supreme executive rear seats featuring up to 43.5 degrees of recline, complete with multi-mode heating, ventilation, and deep-tissue massage operations to maintain the car’s benchmark status.

Safety Features And Ride Comfort

Safety reaches a whole new tier in the updated S-Class, which stands out as the first car in the Indian market to be equipped with a staggering 15 airbags. This is complemented by an advanced Level-2 radar-and-camera-based Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) suite.

The safety kit includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, and a high-resolution 360-degree camera system.

Why This Launch Matters For India

The debut of the Mercedes S 450e India model marks a vital turning point in the country’s top-end luxury car space. Wealthy buyers in India are increasingly demanding electrified vehicles, but many remain hesitant to rely solely on public charging infrastructure during long intercity road trips.

By executing a clever multi-powertrain strategy, Mercedes-Benz India provides a highly logical bridge between traditional combustion engines and full battery-electric vehicles (BEVs).

The S 450e caters perfectly to buyers seeking silent, emission-free city driving alongside a complete insulation from range anxiety, effectively expanding the under-explored premium plug-in hybrid segment.

Rivals In India

The luxury hybrid sedan India market sees the S-Class occupying a rather strategic sweet spot. While it locks horns directly with traditional flagship limousines like the petrol-powered BMW 7 Series and the Audi A8 L, it also draws comparisons against pure electric premium alternatives like the BMW i7 and Mercedes’ own stablemate, the EQS sedan. Additionally, it fends off luxury MPVs like the Lexus LM.

By retaining a combustion engine alongside a highly capable pure EV mode, the S-Class carves out a highly unique position that none of its direct rivals can currently match.
