Tesla has officially accelerated its Indian journey by driving in its second major offering—the Tesla Model Y Long Wheelbase (Model Y L). Launched on April 22, 2026, this new variant arrives as a strategic move to capture the premium family EV segment. By blending Tesla’s signature tech-first approach with the added practicality of a three-row layout, the Model Y L is designed specifically for those who found the standard five-seater variant lacking in utility.
As the demand for high-end electric vehicles continues to surge in India’s metropolitan hubs, the Model Y L enters a market that is increasingly favoring “Long Wheelbase” models for their superior rear-seat comfort. Priced at Rs 61.99 lakh (ex-showroom), it positions itself as a tech-forward alternative to traditional luxury SUVs.

Tesla Model Y Long Wheelbase: What’s New?
The “L” in the moniker stands for more than just a badge; it represents a significant physical transformation. The Model Y L features a wheelbase stretched to 3,040 mm, an increase of approximately 150 mm over the standard model. This extension allows for a specialized 6-seater layout in a 2+2+2 configuration.
Unlike the global 7-seater version, the Indian Model Y L utilizes middle-row captain seats with powered armrests and one-touch folding capabilities. This move highlights Tesla’s focus on the chauffeur-driven preference common among Indian luxury car buyers. To accommodate the third row, the vehicle length has grown to 4,969 mm, making it a formidable presence on Indian roads.
Powertrain, Range & Performance
Tesla has not compromised on performance to gain space. The Model Y L comes exclusively with a Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive (AWD) setup paired with an 88 kWh battery pack.
Claimed Range: A class-leading 681 km (WLTP), which is actually 20 km more than the standard Long Range RWD variant.
Acceleration: Despite its increased weight, it can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5 seconds.
Top Speed: Electronically limited to 201 km/h.
Charging: Supports V3 Supercharging with a peak capacity of 250 kW. Under ideal conditions, you can add roughly 288 km of range in just 15 minutes at a Tesla Supercharger station.
Interior, Features & Technology
The cabin remains an exercise in minimalism but with significant “India-specific” upgrades. The dashboard is dominated by the familiar 16-inch horizontal touchscreen, but 2026 brings an additional 8-inch display for rear passengers to control climate and entertainment.
Key Premium Features:
Comfort: Ventilated front seats and heated seats for both the first and second rows.
Audio: A massive 19-speaker premium sound system for a theatre-like experience.
Air Quality: An advanced HEPA filtration system (Bioweapon Defense Mode) to tackle urban pollution.
Entertainment: Access to “Tesla Theater” (Netflix, YouTube) and “Tesla Arcade” for gaming while parked or charging.
Design & Dimensions
Visually, the Model Y L is identifiable by its slightly longer rear doors and a larger glasshouse area behind the B-pillar.
For the 2026 India-spec model, Tesla has introduced 19-inch aero-designed alloy wheels and a subtle blacked-out rear spoiler to improve aerodynamic efficiency.
It also retains the ultra-clean front fascia with a full-width LED light bar that has become a staple of the brand’s 2026 design language.

Price & Positioning in India
At Rs 61.99 lakh, the Model Y L is priced roughly Rs 2.10 lakh higher than the standard Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) variant. Because Tesla currently operates on a Completely Built Unit (CBU) model, the price includes significant import duties.
Tesla India General Manager Sharad Agarwal stated at the launch that the company is moving toward a direct-to-consumer model, allowing buyers to order online while expanding physical service centers in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Ahmedabad this quarter.
Tesla Model Y L Rivals in India
The Rs 60 lakh to Rs 80 lakh price bracket is no longer a Tesla-only playground. The Model Y L faces stiff competition from established luxury brands:
| Rival Model | Estimated Price | Range (WLTP/Claimed) | Key Advantage |
| Tesla Model Y L | Rs 61.99 Lakh | 681 km | 6-seats & Supercharger network |
| BMW iX1 | Rs 50.90 Lakh* | 440 km | Brand prestige & Driving dynamics |
| Kia EV6 | Rs 65.97 Lakh | 708 km (ARAI) | 800V ultra-fast charging tech |
| BYD Sealion 7 | Rs 52.00 Lakh | 550 km | Value for money & Blade battery safety |
While the BMW iX1 is more affordable, the Model Y L beats it significantly on range and cabin space. The Kia EV6 remains a formidable rival with its futuristic design, but the lack of a third row may sway family buyers toward the Tesla.
