New Mahindra Thar OG vs Previous Thar: What Has Changed?

Mahindra has launched the new Mahindra Thar OG in India with a starting price of Rs. 10.32 lakh (ex-showroom). The three-door SUV replaces the previous Thar with several mechanical, styling and safety upgrades.

While the familiar boxy design remains, Mahindra has made major changes underneath the skin. The Thar OG gets a new platform, updated suspension, electric power steering, more powerful engines and new off-road technology. Deliveries of the new SUV will start from October 11, 2026.

Mahindra Thar OG: New Platform and Suspension

The biggest change comes under the skin. The Thar OG uses Mahindra’s new M_Glyde 4G platform, which offers higher structural stiffness than the outgoing model. It also gets a new rear Penta-link suspension with Watts Link.

Mahindra has added DAVINCI damping technology with Frequency Dependent Damping. This setup should improve ride comfort and stability. The SUV also gets electric power steering for the first time, replacing the hydraulic system used by the previous Thar.

More Power and Better Off-Road Hardware

The 2.2-litre diesel now produces 152hp and 330Nm, up from 134hp and 300Nm. The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine makes 162hp and 330Nm, compared with 152hp and 320Nm earlier. The 1.5-litre diesel continues with 119hp and 300Nm.

The 4WD versions also get an Electronic Locking Differential and dedicated Mud, Sand and Snow terrain modes.

New Design and Features

The Thar OG gets a redesigned grille, circular LED headlamps with C-shaped DRLs, LED fog lamps and new LED tail lamps. Higher variants get new 19-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, the SUV gets Truffle Brown leatherette upholstery, a second-row armrest, wireless charging and updated technology. The higher variants also offer a larger safety and convenience package.

Safety Upgrades

Safety equipment has also improved. The Thar OG gets six airbags, all-disc brakes and ESP with rollover mitigation on higher variants. Front parking sensors and HPTS airbags are also available on the top-spec versions.

In short, the Thar OG keeps the original SUV’s character but adds significant changes to its platform, suspension, steering, engines, off-road hardware, safety and equipment. Its starting price remains at Rs. 10.32 lakh, while the range now extends up to Rs. 18.99 lakh (ex-showroom).
