Nainital Declares Mall Road a No-Honking Zone From August 1, Violators to Face Rs 1,000 Fine

In a major step towards making one of Uttarakhand’s most popular tourist destinations quieter and more environmentally friendly, the Nainital district administration has officially declared Mall Road a no-honking zone from August 1, 2026.

Drivers who violate the new rule by using horns unnecessarily will now face a Rs 1,000 fine under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.

The move is aimed at reducing noise pollution in the scenic hill station, particularly around the busy Mall Road, which witnesses heavy tourist footfall throughout the year.

Nainital: Mall Road Stretch Declared Horn-Free Zone

According to an order issued by the District Magistrate on July 28, the no-honking rule will apply to the stretch between Tallital Danth and the Mallital Rickshaw Stand.

The administration believes that limiting unnecessary honking will improve the overall atmosphere around Naini Lake and provide a more peaceful experience for tourists and local residents alike.

To ensure motorists are aware of the regulation, signboards have been installed across the designated route, reminding drivers that the area is now a horn-free zone.

Rs 1,000 Fine for Violating the Rule

Authorities have made it clear that strict action will be taken against offenders. Anyone found using the horn without necessity inside the designated zone will be fined ₹1,000 under the Motor Vehicles Act.

To ensure effective implementation, police and district administration teams have launched a special enforcement drive across Mall Road.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Nawazish Khalik has appealed to motorists to cooperate with the administration by avoiding unnecessary honking and following the new traffic rules.

Administration Launches Awareness Campaign

The initiative follows a meeting held on July 21 by Kumaon Commissioner Deepak Rawat, where public representatives and government departments discussed rising noise pollution in Nainital.

Following the meeting, the Commissioner directed the District Magistrate to establish a dedicated horn-free zone in the city.

Along with enforcement, the Transport Department, Uttarakhand Police, and the Municipal Corporation have launched an awareness campaign to educate taxi operators, commercial vehicle drivers, local shopkeepers, and residents about the new regulation.

Officials hope that public participation will play a crucial role in making the initiative successful.

More Traffic Rules Introduced Around Naini Lake

The no-honking rule is part of a broader traffic management plan introduced by the district administration.

Authorities have also declared the road stretch from Tallital Danth to Hanumangarhi Band as a no-parking zone to reduce congestion around Naini Lake.

Police teams have started removing illegally parked vehicles and preventing roadside parking that often leads to traffic bottlenecks during peak tourist seasons.

Additionally, officials have warned that vehicles operating without valid fitness certificates will be seized, further strengthening road safety and traffic discipline in the hill station.

A Step Towards Cleaner and Quieter Tourism

With tourism being the backbone of Nainital’s economy, the administration believes that reducing noise pollution and improving traffic management will significantly enhance the visitor experience while protecting the town’s natural charm.

Authorities have urged both residents and tourists to support the initiative by following the new rules and contributing to a cleaner, quieter, and more organized Nainital.
