BMW Welt Reunites All 20 BMW Art Cars for the First Time to Celebrate 50 Years of Automotive Art

BMW is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its iconic BMW Art Car Collection with a landmark exhibition at BMW Welt in Munich, bringing together all 20 BMW Art Cars under one roof for the very first time.

Titled “BMW Art Cars, 20 Artists, 50 Years Of Innovation. Reunited At BMW Welt,” the exhibition is open to visitors until August 31, 2026 and offers a rare opportunity to witness five decades of creativity, design, and automotive innovation in a single venue.

All 20 BMW Art Cars Displayed Together

The BMW Art Car Collection has featured collaborations with some of the world’s most celebrated contemporary artists, transforming iconic BMW models into rolling works of art.

For the first time since the collection began in 1975, every Art Car is displayed together, allowing visitors to experience the complete evolution of BMW’s artistic journey.

The exhibition is arranged in reverse chronological order, guiding visitors from the latest creations back to the very first BMW Art Car.

Guests begin their journey with John Baldessari’s Art Car #19 and Julie Mehretu’s Art Car #20, before concluding at the exhibition’s centerpiece—Alexander Calder’s legendary BMW Art Car #1, displayed on a dedicated central pedestal.

To enhance the experience, BMW has also installed immersive video displays and a detailed historical timeline highlighting the evolution of each Art Car and its creator.

Olafur Eliasson’s BMW H2R Project Steals the Spotlight

Among the exhibition’s standout attractions is Olafur Eliasson’s BMW H2R Project (Art Car #16), showcased at the East Plaza.

Inspired by BMW’s experimental hydrogen-powered H2R prototype, the installation replaces conventional body panels with a skeletal metallic frame covered in frozen water.

Weighing nearly two tonnes and illuminated from within, the sculpture explores themes of sustainability, time, and the changing relationship between technology, mobility, and nature.

The installation offers visitors a unique perspective on what an automobile can represent beyond transportation.

Interactive Digital Experiences for Visitors

BMW has introduced several interactive digital features to make the exhibition more engaging.

Visitors can participate in a Treasure Hunt using the official BMW Welt app by scanning five selected artworks throughout the exhibition. Those who complete the challenge receive a complimentary refreshment voucher for Cooper’s Garden.

Another attraction is the Atlas app, available in 25 languages, which offers personalized exhibition routes, audio guides, and an AI-powered chat assistant that provides additional information about the artists and their creations.
