New MG Windsor Rival Tata Kuno EV Coming in 2027-28: What We Know So Far

Tata Motors is developing a new midsize electric SUV that could challenge the MG Windsor EV in India. Internally known as Tata Kuno EV, the upcoming Tata EV could arrive in the 2027-28 period.

The new model will sit above the Nexon EV and below the Sierra EV in Tata’s electric SUV lineup. The Kuno is expected to measure around 4.3 metres in length and will use Tata’s dedicated Acti.ev architecture.

Tata could also manufacture the new electric SUV at its Sanand plant in Gujarat. The company reportedly plans annual production of around 80,000 to 1 lakh units for this upcoming EV.

Tata Kuno EV: Design

The Tata Kuno will sit in the midsize electric SUV segment and could feature a completely new design rather than simply converting an existing petrol model. Its expected 4.3-metre length will place it between the Nexon EV and Sierra EV in Tata’s portfolio.

The Acti.ev platform gives Tata flexibility to develop different body styles and drivetrain layouts. The platform also features a flat floor and optimised battery packaging. This should help Tata maximise cabin space without making the vehicle excessively large on the outside.

The final exterior design remains unknown, but the Kuno is expected to follow Tata’s latest EV design language and offer a practical family-focused body style.

Tata Kuno EV: Powertrain

Tata Motors has not revealed the Kuno’s battery capacity, motor specifications or claimed range. However, the new electric SUV could borrow technology from the Tata Curvv EV or Sierra EV. The Curvv EV uses a 55kWh battery with a 167hp electric motor and offers a claimed range of up to 502km.

The Sierra EV gets larger 65kWh and 75kWh battery options, with claimed ranges reaching 535km and 665km, respectively. Tata could use a similar battery and motor strategy for the Kuno, but the final specifications remain unconfirmed. The Acti.ev platform can support front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive layouts.

Tata Kuno EV: Cabin and Features

The Tata Kuno could focus heavily on cabin space and comfort to compete with the MG Windsor EV. Tata’s Acti.ev platform uses a flat floor and optimised battery placement, which should free up more interior space. The approximately 4.3-metre body could therefore offer a spacious cabin despite its midsize footprint.

Tata has not revealed the dashboard or equipment list yet. However, the Kuno is expected to feature Tata’s latest connected technology, a large touchscreen infotainment system, a digital instrument cluster and modern safety equipment.

Higher variants could also get premium features and advanced driver assistance systems, although Tata has not confirmed any of these features yet.

Tata Kuno EV: Price and Rivals

Tata has not confirmed the Kuno’s price. Its positioning suggests a price range close to the Curvv EV and Sierra EV. The Curvv EV currently costs Rs. 17.19 lakh–Rs. 19.39 lakh, while the Sierra EV costs Rs. 18.79 lakh–Rs. 25.99 lakh. The Kuno will primarily rival the MG Windsor EV.
