Next-Gen Kia Sonet Spotted Again: Here’s What to Expect

The next-gen Kia Sonet has been spotted testing again, this time during high-altitude testing in the Himalayan region. The latest test mule gives a closer look at the new lighting elements and confirms that Kia is preparing a major generational update rather than another facelift.

The new Sonet is expected to arrive in India in 2027 and could move to Kia’s K1 platform, which also underpins the Syros. The new generation could bring a larger cabin, updated styling, bigger screens and improved safety technology.

Kia is also expected to retain the existing petrol and diesel engine options at launch.

Next-Gen Kia Sonet: Design

The next-generation Kia Sonet will get a substantially redesigned exterior. Spy images show a new front fascia with split LED headlamps, with slim daytime running lights positioned above the main lighting units.

The bonnet appears to follow a clamshell design, while the doors and other body panels look completely new. The test mule also features redesigned ORVMs and larger-looking alloy wheels.

At the rear, Kia is expected to introduce a new tail-light design and a wider high-mounted stop lamp. The overall shape should remain compact, but the more upright body and revised proportions could give the Sonet a stronger road presence.

Next-Gen Kia Sonet: Powertrain

Kia is expected to continue with the current powertrain lineup when it launches the next-generation Sonet. The range could include an 83 PS 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, a 120 PS 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and a 116 PS 1.5-litre diesel engine.

Depending on the engine, Kia is likely to offer manual and automatic transmission options. The new Sonet is also expected to use the K1 platform, which could improve packaging without changing the basic engine strategy.

Kia is reportedly developing a strong-hybrid powertrain for the Sonet as well, but this option could arrive later around 2028 or 2029.

Next-Gen Kia Sonet: Cabin and Safety

The next-generation Kia Sonet is expected to receive a completely redesigned cabin with a more premium dashboard layout. Higher variants could get dual 12.3-inch screens for the infotainment system and digital instrument cluster.

Kia could also offer ventilated front and rear seats, powered driver seat, wireless charging, connected technology, premium audio and a panoramic sunroof.

Safety could see a major upgrade through a 360-degree camera and a more advanced Level 2 ADAS package. The K1 platform could also improve structural safety, with Kia potentially targeting a five-star Bharat NCAP rating for the new Sonet.

Next-Gen Kia Sonet: Price and Rivals

The current Kia Sonet starts at around Rs. 7.34 lakh, ex-showroom. The new-generation model is expected to cost more because of its new platform, features and technology.

It could rival the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Mahindra XUV 3XO and Skoda Kylaq when it arrives in India in 2027.
