Range Rover Electric and Sport Electric Coming to India: JLR Reveals Its EV Launch Strategy

Jaguar Land Rover is preparing to expand its electric SUV portfolio in India with the Range Rover Electric and Range Rover Sport Electric. However, the company will initially bring both models to India as completely built units (CBUs) rather than assembling them locally.

The move will allow JLR to understand customer demand before deciding whether local production makes sense. Both electric SUVs are expected to arrive in India in the second half of 2027.

The strategy marks an important step for JLR as it moves its flagship Range Rover products towards electric power while continuing to offer petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrains.

Range Rover Electric and Sport Electric: Why JLR Is Choosing the CBU Route

JLR already locally assembles the combustion-engine versions of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport in India. The upcoming electric versions, however, will initially arrive as full imports. Range Rover global managing director Martin Limpert said the company wants to test the Indian market before deciding on local assembly.

Both electric SUVs use the MLA-Flex architecture, which also supports the existing powertrains. This means local production could remain a possibility later. JLR also does not receive EV import-duty concessions under the India-UK free-trade agreement during its initial five-year period.

The company therefore wants to assess demand before making a larger manufacturing commitment.

Range Rover Electric: What to Expect

The Range Rover Electric will become the brand’s first fully electric Range Rover. The SUV uses a 118.5kWh battery and dual electric motors that produce a combined 542hp and 850Nm. Land Rover claims a WLTP range of around 600km.

The electric SUV supports DC fast charging at up to 350kW, allowing the battery to charge from 10 to 80 percent in around 22 minutes under suitable conditions. The model also retains the off-road capabilities associated with the Range Rover name.

It can wade through up to 35 inches of water and uses an advanced traction management system designed to improve grip across different surfaces.

Range Rover Sport Electric: A Performance-Focused Luxury EV

The Range Rover Sport Electric will take a more performance-oriented approach to electrification. JLR says the new model will offer more power and torque while retaining the muscular design and dynamic character of the Range Rover Sport.

The company has already demonstrated the electric SUV at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it showcased its performance and all-terrain capability. JLR has also developed a revised chassis setup and additional technologies specifically for the electric model.

The Range Rover Sport Electric will complete the Sport lineup alongside plug-in hybrid, mild-hybrid V8 petrol and six-cylinder petrol and diesel powertrains. More technical details will emerge closer to its launch.

JLR’s Electric Strategy in India

The upcoming Range Rover EVs form part of JLR’s wider strategy to offer more powertrain choices across its luxury brands. The company plans to offer mild-hybrid, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric options across the Range Rover, Defender and Discovery families.

Jaguar, meanwhile, will move towards an all-electric lineup. In India, JLR expects the new electric Range Rover models to strengthen its position in the growing luxury EV market. The company also plans to bring additional electric products to India, giving customers more choices without abandoning its existing combustion and hybrid models.

JLR has not announced the India prices of the Range Rover Electric or Range Rover Sport Electric yet. Both models will arrive as CBUs initially, which could position them at the premium end of India’s luxury EV market. The Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology will be among their key competitors.
