Updated Toyota Fortuner in Work? What to Expect
The next-generation Toyota Fortuner is currently under development, and fresh spy images have given a closer look at the upcoming SUV. The test vehicle was recently spotted on a highway in Thailand, showing parts of its front and side profile.
Toyota has heavily camouflaged the prototype, but the latest images reveal some important design changes. The new Fortuner will follow the latest-generation Toyota Hilux, with which it is expected to share its ladder-frame architecture.
Toyota is expected to reveal the new Fortuner globally around 2026, while its India launch could take place in 2027.

What’s New in the Design of Toyota Fortuner?
The upcoming Toyota Fortuner will retain its familiar upright and rugged SUV shape, but Toyota appears ready to give it a more modern look. The latest spy images show a wider and more upright front fascia. The SUV gets a large central grille with a mesh-style pattern, while the upper section appears relatively horizontal.
The new Fortuner could also get a split-headlamp setup. Slim LED daytime running lights may sit higher on the front fascia, while the main headlamps could sit lower. The bumper also looks sharper than the current model.
From the side, the SUV retains its tall bonnet, high ground clearance and large wheel arches. The latest test vehicle also features side steps and new multi-spoke alloy wheels. Toyota appears to have kept the familiar Fortuner proportions while adding sharper styling details.
What Could Change in the Engine?
Toyota is expected to retain the 2.7-litre petrol and 2.8-litre diesel engines for the next-generation Fortuner in India. The current 2.8-litre diesel engine produces around 204hp, with torque output reaching 500Nm with the automatic gearbox. The diesel engine could continue with Toyota’s 48V mild-hybrid technology in selected versions.
The new Fortuner could also continue with six-speed manual and automatic gearbox options. Four-wheel drive should remain available on higher diesel variants, as the SUV will continue to focus on off-road capability.
Toyota may improve refinement, efficiency and emissions compliance without making major changes to the existing engine family. However, the company has not yet confirmed the final India-spec powertrain lineup.
New Cabin and More Technology Expected
Toyota has not revealed the new Fortuner’s interior yet, but the cabin could receive one of the biggest upgrades. The new-generation SUV is expected to take inspiration from the latest Hilux, which could bring a more modern dashboard layout and larger screens.
A digital instrument cluster and a larger touchscreen infotainment system are expected. Toyota could also add wireless smartphone connectivity, wireless charging, connected-car technology and improved seat comfort.
The biggest safety upgrade could come from ADAS technology. Spy images have already shown an ADAS radar module on the test vehicle. The new Fortuner could therefore offer features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance and autonomous emergency braking, depending on the variant. A 360-degree camera and other active safety features could also join the equipment list.
Expected Price and Rivals in India
The current Toyota Fortuner costs around Rs. 34 lakh onwards ex-showroom. The new-generation model could command a higher starting price due to its updated design, technology and safety equipment. It will continue to rival the MG Majestor, Jeep Meridian and Skoda Kodiaq in India.
