MG Astor Discontinued in India: Here’s Why This Midsize SUV Failed to Attract Buyers

The MG Astor has reportedly been discontinued in India after struggling to attract enough buyers in the highly competitive midsize SUV segment. MG launched the Astor in India in 2021 as a petrol-powered rival to the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq.

Despite its premium features, connected technology and distinctive design, the SUV recorded very low monthly sales. According to dealer sources cited by Autocar India, the Astor averaged only around 112 units per month between September 2025 and September 2026

Why Did MG Astor Fail in India?

One of the biggest reasons behind the Astor’s weak sales was its limited powertrain lineup. At launch, MG offered the SUV with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and a more powerful 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine.

The turbocharged engine produced 140hp and 220Nm, but MG discontinued it in February 2025. This left the Astor with only the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 110hp and 144Nm. Buyers could choose between a 5-speed manual and a CVT automatic.

This became a disadvantage as rivals offered a wider range of powertrains. The midsize SUV segment now includes petrol, diesel, CNG and hybrid options, giving buyers more choices based on their requirements. The Astor’s petrol-only lineup could not match that variety.

The SUV’s design may have also affected its sales. Unlike the tall and upright appearance of models such as the Creta and Seltos, the Astor used a more low-slung crossover design. This gave it a distinctive appearance but also made the SUV look smaller than some of its competitors.

MG Astor Replacement Expected in 2027

MG is not expected to leave the midsize SUV segment. The company has already been developing a replacement for the Astor and ZS EV. The upcoming model could use SAIC’s SIGMA platform, which can support petrol, hybrid and electric powertrains.

This architecture could allow MG to address one of the Astor’s biggest weaknesses by offering more powertrain choices. The replacement is expected to arrive in India around 2027, although MG has not officially confirmed its launch date or specifications.
