2026 Maruti WagonR Facelift Spied With New 3-Cylinder Engine and Underbody CNG
Maruti Suzuki is preparing a major update for the WagonR, one of India’s best-selling hatchbacks. The upcoming 2026 Maruti WagonR facelift has been spotted testing, revealing changes to its powertrain and CNG layout.
The biggest expected update is a new 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, which could replace the existing four-cylinder unit. The facelift is also likely to introduce an underbody CNG tank, following the setup used by the Maruti Victoris.
This change could free up useful boot space in the CNG version. The updated WagonR is expected to retain its practical cabin while receiving styling and feature upgrades.
2026 Maruti WagonR Facelift: What’s New?
The biggest expected change is under the bonnet. Maruti Suzuki could replace the current 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with its newer 1.2-litre three-cylinder Z-Series unit. In the Swift, this engine produces around 82hp and 112Nm. However, Maruti could tune the engine differently for the WagonR. The existing 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine is also expected to continue.
The CNG version could receive an even more important update. The facelift is expected to use an underbody CNG tank instead of placing the cylinder inside the boot. This setup could significantly improve luggage space while retaining the factory-fitted CNG option. Maruti already uses underbody CNG technology on the Victoris.
The test mule also points towards exterior changes, although the exact production design remains under wraps. The facelift could receive revised front and rear styling, along with updated lighting and wheels.
Inside, Maruti is expected to improve equipment and convenience features while retaining the WagonR’s spacious and practical cabin. The current model offers petrol and CNG powertrains, manual and AMT options, and standard safety equipment including six airbags and electronic stability control.
Price and Rivals
The current Maruti WagonR starts at around Rs 4.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The facelift could command a modest premium over the existing model. It will continue to rival the Tata Tiago, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and Maruti Celerio, while its CNG version will target buyers seeking lower running costs.
