BMW M Reaches 1 Millionth Car Milestone in Munich: What Happens Next?
BMW M has reached an important production milestone as the performance division has built its one-millionth BMW M High Performance vehicle. The milestone car rolled out from the BMW Group’s Munich plant and is a BMW M3 finished in the special BMW Individual Fire Orange III paint.
The achievement comes more than five decades after BMW M was founded and around 40 years after the first-generation BMW M3 entered production. However, the milestone is not only about BMW M’s history.
The Munich plant is also preparing for a major change as BMW plans to produce fully electric vehicles at the facility from 2027.
One-Millionth BMW M Is a Special M3
The one-millionth BMW M vehicle is a BMW M3 Competition finished in Fire Orange III. The special car was completed at BMW Group Plant Munich and was handed over during an official ceremony attended by Peter Weber, head of the Munich plant, and Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH.
The M3 has a special connection with the Munich facility, as the plant has produced generations of the performance sedan. BMW says the milestone represents more than five decades of development for its high-performance division.
The company also highlighted the combination of road-going usability and racetrack performance that defines its M models.

Munich Plant To Become Electric-Only From 2027
The BMW M milestone also comes at an important time for the Munich production facility. BMW plans to make the plant an electric-only production site from 2027. The facility will produce the first fully electric BMW M3 based on BMW’s Neue Klasse technology.
The electric M3 will become one of the key high-performance models produced at the Munich plant alongside other upcoming electric vehicles. BMW has invested around €650 million in transforming the facility, including new production structures, logistics facilities and digital manufacturing systems.
The company says the transformation will allow the historic plant to move from its long combustion-engine production history toward fully electric vehicle manufacturing.
BMW M3 Marks the Beginning of a New Era
The one-millionth M vehicle being an M3 also connects BMW M’s past with its upcoming electric future. The first BMW M3 arrived around four decades ago, while the next-generation electric M3 will bring BMW M’s performance technology to the Neue Klasse platform.
BMW has confirmed that the fully electric M3 will be produced in Munich from 2027. This means the same facility that built the millionth M car will also manufacture the first fully electric high-performance M3.
BMW says this transition will involve changes to both vehicle technology and manufacturing processes as the plant adopts more digital and automated production systems.
What Does This Milestone Mean for BMW M?
BMW M’s one-millionth vehicle marks a major production milestone for the performance division. The company has moved from its early motorsport-focused roots to a wider range of high-performance cars and SUVs.
Now, electrification is becoming the next major phase for the brand. The Munich plant will play a central role in this transition by producing the fully electric BMW M3 from 2027.
While the milestone car uses a conventional combustion engine, its production location will soon focus exclusively on fully electric vehicles.
