Bajaj Chetak Production to Reach 80,000 Units a Month by Q4 FY2027

Bajaj Auto plans to increase the monthly production of its Bajaj Chetak electric scooter to around 80,000 units by the fourth quarter of FY2027. The company currently produces slightly more than 62,000 Chetak units each month.

Bajaj says demand for the electric scooter remains higher than its available production capacity. The company expects further production improvements during the January-March 2027 quarter.

Bajaj also plans to expand the Chetak range over the next six months as it looks to address more customer requirements. 

Bajaj Chetak Production Capacity to Increase

Bajaj Auto had earlier faced supply-related disruptions that limited Chetak production to around 40,000 units per month, despite having capacity for approximately 60,000 units. The company has now restored production to full capacity. However, demand continues to remain higher than output.

Bajaj expects further debottlenecking in the January-March 2027 quarter. This should help the company increase Chetak production to nearly 80,000 units every month. The higher production capacity should allow Bajaj to serve more customers and reduce the gap between demand and supply.

The company is also considering a sixth manufacturing plant in India. Bajaj says capacity constraints now affect its premium motorcycle and internal combustion engine businesses as well as its electric scooter operations. The company has started discussions with several states but has not announced the location, investment, production capacity or timeline for the proposed plant. 

Bajaj Chetak Range to Expand

Bajaj Auto also plans to expand the Chetak electric scooter range during the next six months. The company has not revealed details about the upcoming models or variants yet. The expansion will aim to address different customer requirements as electric scooter adoption increases across India.

According to Bajaj, electric vehicles currently account for around 25 percent of scooter sales in India. The company expects this share could reach around 50 percent over the next three to five years. EV penetration already varies significantly between states, with higher adoption in markets such as Odisha and Maharashtra.

Bajaj’s latest production expansion highlights the growing demand for the Chetak. The company will now focus on increasing output while adding more products to its electric scooter portfolio.
