Electric Car Sales Report July 2026: Tata Leads EV Market
India’s electric passenger vehicle market continued its strong growth momentum in July 2026. Total retail electric car sales reached 32,928 units, compared to 17,981 units in July 2025. The market added 14,947 more units year-on-year, registering an impressive 83.13 percent growth.
Tata Motors remained the market leader with more than 41 percent market share. Mahindra secured the second position after recording triple-digit growth.
JSW MG Motor held third place despite a slight decline in sales. New entrants such as Maruti Suzuki, VinFast and Tesla also strengthened competition in the Indian EV market.
Tata Motors Continues to Lead the EV Segment
Tata Motors retained the top spot in India’s electric car market during July 2026. The company sold 13,678 electric cars, up from 6,732 units in July 2025.
The automaker added 6,946 units year-on-year and recorded 103.18 percent growth. Tata Motors also captured 41.54 percent of the total electric passenger vehicle market, the highest among all manufacturers.
Mahindra Records the Highest Growth Among Leading Brands
Mahindra finished second with retail sales of 7,742 units in July 2026. The company sold 3,416 units during the same month last year.
Mahindra added 4,326 units and recorded an impressive 126.64 percent year-on-year growth. The brand secured a 23.51 percent market share, strengthening its position in India’s growing EV segment.
JSW MG Motor Holds Third Position Despite Decline
JSW MG Motor remained the third-largest electric car brand in India. The company retailed 5,689 units in July 2026 against 5,902 units a year ago.
Sales declined by 213 units, resulting in a 3.61 percent drop. Even with the decline, MG held a healthy 17.28 percent market share.
Maruti Suzuki and VinFast Make a Strong Entry
Maruti Suzuki entered the electric passenger vehicle market with retail sales of 1,600 units in July 2026. The company secured a 4.86 percent market share during its first full year in the segment.
VinFast also made an encouraging debut with 1,482 retail sales, capturing 4.50 percent market share.
BYD, Kia and BMW Post Healthy Growth
BYD continued its steady expansion in India. The company sold 749 electric cars, compared to 613 units in July 2025. Sales increased by 22.19 percent, giving BYD a 2.27 percent market share.
Kia recorded one of the strongest growth rates in the market. The brand retailed 470 units, up from 65 units last year. This translated into an impressive 623.08 percent growth. Kia’s market share reached 1.43 percent.
BMW also reported positive performance. The luxury carmaker sold 369 electric vehicles, registering 36.67 percent growth over last year.
Hyundai and Citroen Register Decline
Hyundai reported retail sales of 566 units in July 2026, down from 719 units in July 2025. Sales fell by 21.28 percent, reducing the company’s market share to 1.72 percent.
Citroen also witnessed a decline. The company sold 51 units, compared to 68 units a year ago. Sales dropped by 25 percent.
Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Tesla and Volvo Expand Their Presence
Mercedes-Benz sold 165 electric cars, registering 43.48 percent growth over last year. Toyota entered the segment with 123 retail sales, while Tesla recorded 115 retail deliveries during the month.
Volvo also posted positive growth with 49 units, an increase of 13.95 percent compared to July 2025.
