Tata Expands BaaS to All EVs, Prices Drop by Up to Rs. 7.3 Lakh

Tata Motors has expanded its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) program to its entire electric car range in India. The scheme was earlier available only with the Tiago EV and Punch EV.

It now covers the Nexon EV, Curvv EV, Sierra EV and Harrier EV as well. Under the BaaS model, buyers pay a lower upfront price for the vehicle and finance the battery separately.

This brings the starting price of Tata’s electric cars down significantly, with the Harrier EV becoming up to Rs. 7.3 lakh cheaper in terms of upfront cost.

Tata EV BaaS prices

Under the new BaaS scheme, the Tata Tiago EV starts at Rs. 4.69 lakh, compared with Rs. 6.99 lakh without BaaS. The Punch EV starts at Rs. 6.59 lakh instead of Rs. 9.79 lakh.

The Nexon EV gets a BaaS starting price of Rs. 8.99 lakh, while its regular starting price is Rs. 14.34 lakh. The Curvv EV starts at Rs. 10.99 lakh with BaaS compared with Rs. 17.19 lakh without the scheme.

The Sierra EV is available from Rs. 11.99 lakh under BaaS, compared with its regular starting price of Rs. 18.79 lakh. The Harrier EV gets the biggest reduction, with its BaaS price starting at Rs. 14.49 lakh compared with Rs. 21.79 lakh without the scheme. All prices are ex-showroom and apply to the entry-level variants.

How Tata’s BaaS scheme works

Battery-as-a-Service separates the battery cost from the vehicle’s purchase price. Buyers can finance the vehicle and battery through separate loan accounts instead of paying for the complete EV and battery together.

The battery rental or financing cost depends on factors such as battery size, down payment and loan tenure. Tata Motors has partnered with multiple financiers to offer different financing arrangements. The company says there is no separate hidden battery down-payment cost under the scheme.

The BaaS pricing also comes with a per-kilometre battery rental for several models. The Tiago EV and Punch EV have a rental rate of Rs. 2.6 per km, while the Nexon EV has a Rs. 4.4 per km rate. The Curvv EV, Sierra EV and Harrier EV have rates of Rs. 5, Rs. 5.5 and Rs. 5.9 per km respectively.

Tata EVs become more accessible

The expansion gives customers the option to choose between paying the full vehicle price upfront or using the BaaS model to reduce the initial purchase cost. The biggest upfront reduction comes with the Harrier EV at Rs. 7.3 lakh, followed by the Sierra EV at Rs. 6.8 lakh and the Curvv EV at Rs. 6.2 lakh.

Tata’s move also expands the BaaS option across both its smaller EVs and larger SUVs. Other automakers, including Mahindra and MG, have also introduced similar battery-related financing models for their electric vehicles.

What this means for buyers

The BaaS model can reduce the initial amount required to purchase a Tata EV, but buyers need to consider the additional battery rental or financing cost over the ownership period. The final cost can vary depending on the financing tenure, variant, down payment and usage.

With BaaS now available across the full Tata EV range, customers have another financing option when purchasing models such as the Nexon EV, Curvv EV, Sierra EV and Harrier EV.
