Top 5 Best-Selling Car Companies in September 2026: Maruti, Tata, Mahindra, Hyundai, Kia Sales

September 2026 brought strong sales for several major carmakers in India ahead of the festive season. Maruti Suzuki continued to lead the domestic passenger vehicle market, while Tata Motors, Mahindra, Hyundai and Kia completed the top five.

The ranking below is based on domestic passenger vehicle wholesale sales reported for September 2026. The figures include electric vehicles where the respective company includes them in its passenger vehicle numbers. Maruti Suzuki recorded the highest volume, while Kia reported its highest-ever monthly sales since entering India.

Here is a detailed look at the September 2026 sales of the top five car companies.

1. Maruti Suzuki – 1,81,838 Units

Maruti Suzuki remained India’s best-selling carmaker in September 2026 with domestic passenger vehicle sales of 1,81,838 units. The company recorded a 36.91% year-on-year increase from 1,32,820 units in September 2025. Sales also increased 2.75% from 1,76,971 units in August 2026.

SUVs and MPVs accounted for 78,911 units, while mini, compact and mid-size cars contributed 91,887 units. Maruti Suzuki’s total sales stood at 2,36,013 units, including 1,85,252 domestic sales, 6,542 units sold to other OEMs and 44,219 exports.

2. Tata Motors – 68,810 Units

Tata Motors ranked second with domestic passenger vehicle sales of 68,810 units in September 2026. The company recorded 15.32% year-on-year growth compared with 59,667 units in September 2025. Sales also increased 5.45% from 65,253 units in August 2026.

Tata Motors recorded total passenger vehicle sales of 70,210 units during September, including 1,400 units from international markets. Electric vehicle sales reached 15,384 units during the month, compared with 9,191 units in September 2025, marking a 67% increase.

3. Mahindra – 64,092 Units

Mahindra secured third place with 64,092 domestic utility vehicle sales in September 2026. The company recorded 14% year-on-year growth over 56,233 units sold in September 2025. Sales also increased 8.16% from 59,257 units in August 2026.

Mahindra’s passenger vehicle portfolio consists entirely of utility vehicles, including its SUV range and electric-origin SUVs. The company reported total auto sales of 1,14,874 units in September, including exports. Its domestic commercial vehicle sales stood at 30,420 units during the month.

4. Hyundai – 57,166 Units

Hyundai Motor India ranked fourth with domestic sales of 57,166 units in September 2026. The company recorded 10.9% year-on-year growth during the month. September sales also increased 5.09% from 54,396 units in August 2026.

Hyundai reported total monthly sales of 77,916 units, including 20,750 exports. This marked the company’s highest-ever monthly total sales since it started operations in India. The Creta, Venue, Exter, Verna, i20, Alcazar, Tucson and other models formed part of Hyundai’s India portfolio during the month.

5. Kia – 32,017 Units

Kia completed the top five with 32,017 units sold in India in September 2026. The company recorded a 41.04% year-on-year increase from 22,700 units in September 2025. Sales also increased 10.24% from 29,042 units in August 2026. Kia said September marked its highest-ever monthly wholesale volume since entering the Indian market.

Its January-September 2026 sales reached 2,53,008 units, up 22.5% from 2,06,582 units during the same period in 2025. The Seltos and Sonet remained important models in Kia’s sales volume.
