How many types of suspension are there in bikes?

Car&Bike Tips

Suspension plays an important role in any bike for a comfortable ride. If it gets damaged then the passengers sitting on the bike feel shocks while driving. Besides, there is difficulty in riding the bike.

Do you know that different types of suspension are used in different bikes. Today in Car Guide we have brought information about bike suspension for you.

Suspension is an important part of the bike. The work of suspension is to connect the tire axle of any bike to the chassis. The entire burden of the bike is on its suspension system.

It has springs and dampers for shock absorbers. The suspension absorbs all kinds of shocks during the journey and does not let it affect the rider, due to which we enjoy traveling on the bike without any shocks.

Let us know how many types of suspension are there.

The bikes get two types of suspension: telescopic forks and upside down (USD) inverted forks for the front wheel, while suspension options like spring loaded hydraulic, gas charged shock absorbers and mono shock units are available for the rear wheel.

1. Telescopic forks

Currently telescopic suspension is used for front suspension in bikes. In this suspension, a barrel is placed below and a slider bar is placed above.

To provide shock absorbing facility, there is a spring and fork oil inside it, which provides it the facility of free movement. Its design is simple and it is also easy to make. Besides, it is also very attractive to look at, due to which bikers are attracted towards it.

2. Inverted USD front forks

USD forks are also known as inverted forks. This is the exact opposite of telescopic suspension. In this suspension setup the fork tube is connected to the axle. In this, slider bars are placed at the bottom.

By installing this, the weight of the bike is reduced, which improves handling. However, there are fork oils on top, which can cause them to leak even with the slightest malfunction. Their prices are also high.

3. Spring loaded hydraulic unit

Spring loaded hydraulic system follows the laws of hydraulics. A type of liquid called damping oil is used as a base in this suspension. This liquid is placed in a hydraulic piston.

There is a spring outside the suspension and this spring ensures that the spring presses down due to the piston pressure and provides a comfortable ride to the rider. It is used in budget segment bikes.

4. Gas Charged Shock Absorber Unit

An updated version of the spring loaded hydraulic system is a gas charged shock absorber unit. In this, the gas filled from the canister is combined with the spring loaded hydraulic suspension and hence it is named supercharged shock absorber.

Nitrogen is used for this suspension and for this it is also known as Nitrox suspension. It is used in bikes like TVS Apache and Bajaj Pulsar.

5. Mono shock units

Many premium bikes have a spring mounted on the rear frame to absorb road undulations, known as mono shock suspension. It uses a linkage to connect the shock to the swing arm.

The performance of mono shock suspension is much better than other twin shock absorbers. It provides better cornering and highway stability. It is quite easy to tune and adjust.
